Thinking of running Linux?

This is a pretty good write up of someone's experience with migrating from Windows XP to Linux. One of these days I keep telling myself that I should install it on mine. I really need to take a weekend out and install it on a spare drive or something.

(Maybe I should find a weekend to do my taxes first.)

Gmail capacity increase

If you are waiting for gmail to hit 3gig; you may be in for a wait. This guy did some calculations as to how many days it will take google to offer 3gig for gmail. He takes into account the current rate of increase/second. Just a fun tidbit I guess.

Al Michaels traded for a bunny

Ok, so the headline is a little misleading. But its not really that far off the truth. Al Michaels, the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football, was traded from ABC to NBC for the rights to a cartoon bunny created by Walt Disney in the 1920's. I kid you not... read the details in the article.

1 is the most powerful number

This article details a mathematical theory known as 'Benford's Law'. It basically states that the number '1' is most likely to appear in any set of numerical data than any other number. For example; if you have a data set where the numbers start with digits 1 thru 9; the numbers will start with '1' about 30% of the time. Typical rules of probability dictate that the number '1' appear 1 out 9 times; but that is not true. My head hurts after reading this.

Do you Yahoo!?

Yahoo really wants you to user their search engine. Look at this image of all the benefits they will give you if you do. I am particularly interested in the NetFlix for $10.99 (instead of $17.99). This begs the question; do I really need to use google or is Yahoo good enough?

Opera - The forgotten browswer

Opera announced the release of their newest browser: Opera 9 Tech Preview 2. I am mainly a firefox user; but this new release looks pretty interesting. They are offering built in BitTorrent and 'widgets' (think OSX). I am personally never given Opera a try; but I know some ppl swear by it. I plan to download it and try it out for a few days to see if the hype is deserved.

Blog Outage

So earlier this morning; my blog went down for a few minutes (10-15min I think). I have root caused it to Sanjay's virus-infected computer; but thats not important. During my frantic search to find out if the blog was back up; I came across this great tool. It allows you to enter a url and have it pinged from servers all over the world to check for outage.

Microsft is too funny

I ran across this ad for Microsoft frontpage on some website. They claim to have cleaned up their act. We know thats not possible. If you look closely at the image, you will see that they are using a wrong 'paragraph' tag. It should be a 'starting' tag; but they have put a 'ending' tag instead.

Take advantage of balance transfers

Here is an excellent guide to taking advantage of the 0% balance transfer offers that many credit cards offer. With the rising interest rates at Emigrant/HSBC; you can park the money in a savings account and make a extra $50-$100 a month easy! Please keep in mind that doing this will probably lower your credit score a little bit since you are increasing your debt (temporarily).
